Orthognathic treatment

Orthognathic treatment is undertaken to correct severe jaw discrepancies and involves a combination of orthodontics and surgery. It can greatly improve oral function, facial and dental appearance and the patient’s quality of life.

Orthognathic treatment

The purpose of Orthognathic treatment, or jaw surgery as it also is known, is a process of correcting jaw discrepancies which are affecting your oral function and facial appearance. Would you benefit from the jaw surgery treatment? With a combination of orthognathic and orthodontic treatment, our passionate and experienced team here at Making Smiles Hammersmith will greatly improve your oral function and dental appearance will improve your quality of life.

However, please be aware that depending on the severity of the case the change to dental and facial appearance will differ. Jaw surgery involves correcting either your upper jaw or lower jaw or a combination of both depending on the severity of the treatment needed. All the jaw surgery is carried out inside the face so there are no visible scars on your face. Orthognathic surgery is performed by repositioning your jaws to be held in their new position by small screws and plates beneath the gum which are left there indefinitely. You will also need to wear orthodontic elastics instantly after surgery to let your bite settle following the surgery.

The jaw surgery treatment duration depends on the challenges that the treatment faces such as how much realignment needs to be made to the positioning of the teeth. But our orthodontists will provide this information to you during your consultation.

Following the surgery, all patients are required to wear removable retainers which is the last stage of the treatment process and this will help maintain your teeth in the new position. Our orthodontist team will advise you on how long you will need to wear these retainers for and your progress will be reviewed regularly.

We will encourage you to start drinking and eating softer foods such as soups, smoothies and yogurt etc after the surgery in order to get the maximum long-lasting benefits following the treatment plan.

At around six weeks after treatment you can start eating hard foods again because this will have given time for your jawbones to heal. When brushing your teeth you need to make sure you are using a soft toothbrush and to take care brushing in between the teeth and the gums throughout the treatment especially after jaw surgery.
