, Invisalign can straighten crooked teeth, close gaps, and correct bite issues without being visible, meaning you can be confident that you can be working on your smile without anyone knowing about it.

Of course, as with any orthodontic treatment, there are some minor side effects that come along for the ride, one of the most common being headaches, but the article below will look at why headaches can sometimes occur during treatment and what you can do to help ease the pain.

Understanding How Invisalign Works

Invisalign aligners are a practically invisible brace system that works by applying controlled force to different parts of your teeth, at different stages in your treatment. You will begin by having images taken of your mouth, teeth, and gums. From this, your orthodontist will map out your treatment plan, taking the current and final straightened position of your teeth to map out a treatment plan that gradually aligns your teeth.

Your Invisalign trays are made from clear, medical-grade thermoplastic, which is strong and smooth, and so very comfortable to wear. Every few weeks, you get a replacement set of aligners, which aims to move specific teeth with each set, creating a controlled and less painful way of aligning your teeth, and gradually working towards your perfect smile.

Is it Possible to Experience Headaches with Invisalign?

Unfortunately, the most common side effect of wearing Invisalign can be headaches. The severity of your malocclusion (degree of misalignment) can determine the severity of your headaches. For people who suffer from headaches from wearing Invisalign, it is usually when they first start wearing their aligners, or when they have a new set of aligners, every 2 weeks. This is simply because your teeth are not yet used to the new pressure being put on them, as well as getting used to having something in your mouth.

If you are suffering from headaches whilst wearing Invisalign, the good news is that it will be short-lived. Generally speaking, once a patient is used to their new set of aligners and the new pressure exerted on their teeth, the headache should subside.

Understand the Cause of headaches that Occur with Invisalign

While Invisalign is designed to be comfortable, it is possible to experience some tension headaches from the pressure exerted on your teeth. It’s important to note that headaches can be caused by a variety of factors, and determining the specific cause requires careful consideration.

  • Initial Discomfort – it’s common for patients to experience some discomfort or soreness when they first start wearing Invisalign aligners. This is because the teeth are gradually shifting, and the aligners are applying pressure to achieve this movement. While this discomfort is typically temporary, it may contribute to headaches, especially during the initial stages of treatment.
  • Teeth Alignment Process – as the teeth move into their new positions, the surrounding tissues, including nerves and blood vessels, may be affected. This process could lead to minor headaches as the body adapts to the changes occurring in the oral cavity.
  • Tension from Clenching or Grinding – some individuals may unconsciously clench or grind their teeth, especially during the adjustment period to wearing aligners. This added pressure on the jaw and surrounding muscles could potentially result in headaches.
  • Dehydration – wearing Invisalign requires diligence in maintaining oral hygiene, which includes adequate hydration. Dehydration can lead to headaches, and if individuals are not consuming enough water, it could exacerbate any discomfort associated with wearing aligners.

How to Manage Invisalign-Related Headaches

The good news is that these headaches are usually mild and short-lived and can be easily treated with over-the-counter medication. However, there are other things that can help alongside medication:

  • Stay Hydrated – ensure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day to stay hydrated, which can help alleviate headaches and maintain overall health.
  • Take Breaks – if you’re experiencing discomfort, it’s okay to take short breaks from wearing your aligners. However, it’s crucial to wear them for the recommended number of hours each day for effective treatment.
  • Manage Stress – stress can contribute to teeth clenching and grinding. Practice stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga to help alleviate tension.
  • Over-the-Counter Pain Relief – if headaches persist, over-the-counter pain relievers may provide temporary relief. However, it’s essential to consult with your orthodontist if headaches are persistent or severe

Determining Severity: Is it Invisalign or Could it be Something Else?

While it may be common to experience headaches whilst wearing Invisalign, it is important for you to pay attention to the severity, consistency, and duration of your headaches. The intensity of headaches will depend on the severity of the patient’s malocclusions. If that person has severely crooked or gappy teeth, or their bite misalignment is particularly severe, then it is more likely that the headaches they experience will be severe also.

It is important to understand there are several factors that may increase headache severity for a patient, including:

  • The movement of the patient’s teeth puts strain on the jaw; therefore it is more likely that headaches will ensue.
  • If the movement of the teeth causes a significant shift in your bite, it may create jaw misalignment, which could lead to headaches and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder symptoms in the neck.
  • Your new aligners could cause you to clench and grind your teeth, which could cause tension headaches.

On the other hand, if your headache is persistent, very severe, or causing a change in your eyesight, then it is likely not related to your Invisalign treatment and it is very important for you to seek medical help as soon as possible.
