The Purpose of Retainers

Whether you underwent traditional braces or opted for Invisalign treatment, wearing a retainer is essential for maintaining the results achieved through orthodontics.

Without consistent retainer wear, your teeth may shift back to their pre-orthodontic position. Think of your teeth as having a memory of their own. It takes approximately a year for teeth to become stable in their new position. During this time, your teeth are prone to shifting back because the bone hasn’t fully formed around their new location. A retainer helps train your teeth to stay in their ideal position while the stabilisation process takes place.

Timeline of Retainers

Immediately after your braces are removed, you’ll be instructed to wear your retainer for the first 3-6 months for 12 hours a day or as your orthodontist advises. This initial phase is crucial for allowing your teeth to adapt to their new position and for the bone to stabilise. After the initial period, your orthodontist will assess the stability of your teeth and may allow you to transition to wearing your retainer only at night.

Continuing with regular night time wear is recommended for approximately one year from the start of your retainer use. This duration ensures that your teeth are firmly set in their new position. Once the year mark has passed, you can usually switch to wearing your retainer every other night for the rest of your life.

It’s important to note that if you ever feel your retainer becoming tight, you should resume wearing it every night until it slightly loosens into a more comfortable position. As you age, your teeth may naturally shift forward, albeit gradually. Regular retainer use will help prevent noticeable changes and maintain the straight smile you’ve worked hard to achieve.

The length of time you need to wear a retainer after braces varies for each individual, but the general rule is to wear it for as long as you want your teeth to stay straight. By wearing your retainer consistently, you allow your teeth to stabilise in their new position and prevent any unwanted shifting. Remember, the longer you wear your retainer, the better your chances of maintaining the results of your orthodontic treatment.
